This video captures the session held at Stockholm World Water Week 2025, bringing together international experts and GEF project implementers to explore how groundwater can support climate resilience and adaptation. Ambitious aims, incremental gains: Enhancing Groundwater Data to Unblock Progress – Video
This session explores progress, challenges, and lessons learned in strengthening groundwater data across Africa, drawing on experiences from three groundwater-focused GEF projects. Speakers and panellists discuss groundwater monitoring, transboundary data governance, and continental groundwater risk and opportunity assessments, highlighting how data and knowledge can better support decision-making, investment, and sustainable groundwater management.
Groundwater Risk and Opportunities Atlas
The Groundwater Risk and Opportunities Atlas provides an integrated view of groundwater risks and opportunities across Africa, bringing together hydrogeological, socio-economic and governance information to support strategic groundwater planning and decision-making.
The Atlas is based on the Africa Groundwater Risks and Opportunities Framework (Africa GROW), which links natural, socio-economic, infrastructure and governance conditions with key social, economic and environmental outcomes. It helps identify groundwater risk and opportunity hotspots across Africa and provides insights to support sustainable groundwater development, climate resilience and improved water security.
Developed under Component 2 of the G4DR project, the Atlas was technically led by IIASA and provides an interactive platform for exploring groundwater risks and opportunities at different scales.
