Drawing on country experiences, the brief highlights practical lessons for protecting monitoring systems, responding to infrastructure damage and strengthening the continuity and reliability of groundwater data. The brief provides practical insights to support more resilient groundwater monitoring and management across Africa.
Incorporating Gender into Groundwater – Knowledge Brief
Lessons and reflections from GESI assessments across three shared African groundwater systems
The knowledge brief explores how gender equality and social inclusion can strengthen groundwater management across the Mono Basin, Shire Basin and Upper Nile Water Management Zone. Drawing on GESI assessments conducted in Benin, Togo, Malawi, Mozambique, and Uganda, the brief highlights how gender roles, access to resources, and decision-making influence groundwater use and resilience. It shares practical lessons and approaches for moving from gender-blind interventions towards more inclusive, gender-responsive groundwater governance.
Shire Basin & Aquifer System – Knowledge Brief
Groundwater for climate resilience: Policy insights from the Shire Basin and Aquifer System
Developed in collaboration with WaterAid, this knowledge brief explores the role of groundwater in strengthening climate resilience in the Shire Basin and Aquifer System shared by Malawi and Mozambique. Drawing on local evidence and project experience, the brief highlights key challenges, including limited monitoring, policy gaps, and risks of groundwater salinity.
