Groundwater is an increasingly important resource in the Mono Basin, shared by Benin and Togo, but limited monitoring infrastructure and gaps in cross-border data sharing have made it difficult to develop a shared understanding of the resource. Through the GEF-funded Groundwater for aDvancing Resilience in Africa (G4DR) project and the IW Twinning Programme, the Mono Basin Authority (MBA) exchanged experiences with the Niger Basin Authority, Volta Basin Authority and Lake Chad Basin Commission on transboundary groundwater monitoring and data sharing.
The two-day technical meeting in Cotonou, Benin, brought together experts to compare monitoring systems, identify gaps, and explore practical approaches to strengthen data sharing. Discussions resulted in priority actions and a roadmap for developing a groundwater data-sharing system for the Mono Basin, including a binding data-sharing protocol and options for a shared data platform. The exchange also provided an opportunity for participating basin organisations to learn from G4DR’s Youth Ambassador model for engaging young people in groundwater monitoring and communication.
