Across Benin, Togo, Malawi, Mozambique and Uganda, young people are playing a central role in strengthening community engagement around groundwater and climate resilience through the GEF-funded Groundwater for aDvancing Resilience in Africa (G4DR) project. Through its Youth Ambassador programme, G4DR is supporting young people to raise awareness, engage communities, share knowledge and bring youth perspectives into water governance and decision-making.
The Youth Ambassadors are working directly with communities through awareness workshops, focus groups, Theatre for Development activities, school sessions and practical training on sustainable groundwater management. Their work is helping communities understand the importance of groundwater monitoring and encouraging local stewardship of monitoring infrastructure, while also laying the foundations for greater youth participation in groundwater governance. The project is also looking ahead to establishing a Pan-African Youth Forum to strengthen youth contributions to groundwater decision-making.
